South Hull Historical District Association (SHDA)
SHDA began as an effort to bring Historic Neighborhood status to South Hull which began to grow as a neighborhood during the 1940’s and 1950’s as a development for military serving in World War II and their families. Watch this site for interviews with residents and others whose stories tell the history of the neighborhood and those who populate it now and then.
The effort at achieving historic status for South Hull continues under the devoted stewardship of Vinny Chandrasoma. In the process of seeking this status, SHDA has become a link between the neighborhood, politicians and city services. From this effort, SHDA has developed two lines of activity that complement each other - sustaining the neighborhood and its housing infrastructure and also nourishing and sustaining positive relationships among the diverse members of the South Hull Community.
Monthly meetings are also opportunities for residents to meet and interact. The annual Christmas party and decorating contest, early summer picnics, Mardi Gras parades and other events also draw residents of South Hull together.
Most recently, SHDA was awarded a grant from Montgomery Neighborhood Services for a beautification project that improved landscape curb appeal among selected houses. The project was enhanced by teaming with the Paint Your Door program as SHDA used grant monies and volunteers to paint doors in the neighborhood. This will also be an on-going effort as funds and volunteers are available.
Like all healthy neighborhoods, South Hull depends on volunteers to sustain the quality of life in the community. We are fortunate to have a cadre of devoted volunteers who do everything from dig holes for trees to picking up litter on their morning walks.
The first thing you might notice about South Hull is that people walk for their health, for relaxation, to exercise their dogs. The streets may be populated with children waiting for a school bus or playing football or folks tending their gardens. Look out your window in early morning or evening and you’ll get a sense of the life here and also how much we love our dogs!
Why not participate in the sustainability of the neighborhood you’ve chosen to call home by joining SHDA? We are hoping for a lifelong friendship.
Warm Regards and Welcome
